What is Fee-Free TAFE?

A joint Australian and state government program offering tuition-free vocational training in areas of skills shortage — including construction, care and technology. It's now a permanent part of the national training system.

Who is eligible?

Broadly, you need to be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or hold an eligible visa on a pathway to residency. Beyond that, places are prioritised for target groups.

• First Nations Australians
• Young people aged 17–24
• People out of work or on income support
• Unpaid carers
• Women studying in non-traditional fields
• People with disability

How many can you do?

Access has historically been limited to one fee-free qualification within the funding period, and some states limit you to one fee-free course per semester. The permanent scheme may change this — check your state's current rules.
