Forklift licence (LF) in Australia: how to get one and keep it current

To operate most forklifts in Australia you need an LF High Risk Work Licence. Unlike a White Card, this is a government-issued licence — here's how to get one and keep it valid.

What is an LF licence?

"LF" is the class of High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) for a forklift truck. It's issued by your state's WHS regulator (SafeWork NSW, WorkSafe VIC, and so on), and it's a legal requirement to operate a forklift in most workplaces.

How to get one

• Train and be assessed through an RTO that delivers the TLILIC0004 — Licence to operate a forklift truck unit.
• Pass the theory and practical assessment.
• Apply to your state regulator for the licence (usually within 60 days of assessment), with ID and your assessment paperwork.
• You'll be issued a plastic HRWL card.

Cost and how long it lasts

Training is commonly $300–$600, plus a regulator application fee. An HRWL is generally valid for five years, then renewed with your regulator.

Because it's a five-year licence, it's easy to lose track of the expiry — and an expired HRWL means you legally can't operate the forklift.

Renewing your forklift licence

Renewal is done through your state regulator before the expiry date — usually a form, a fee and a recent photo, without redoing the full training (provided you renew on time). Let it lapse and you may face reassessment.
