What is Free TAFE Construction?

It's a joint Australian and state government initiative that funds high-priority construction qualifications. Free TAFE has been made a permanent part of the training system, with construction singled out as a national priority because of the demand for workers to build housing and infrastructure.

What courses are covered?

Priority construction qualifications and skill sets — carpentry, bricklaying, concreting, plumbing, civil construction and pre-apprenticeship pathways. The exact list is set by each state and changes over time, so check your state's TAFE or skills gateway for what's currently funded.

Are you eligible?

• Generally you need to be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or hold an eligible visa.

How to apply

Find a funded course through your state TAFE or skills gateway, confirm you meet the eligibility and course entry requirements, and enrol. The provider applies the funding — you pay whatever, if anything, is left.

"Fee-free" usually covers tuition. You may still need to pay for materials, uniforms or resources — check before you enrol.
