How to get a White Card: step-by-step

You need a White Card before you can legally work on a construction site in Australia. Getting one is straightforward — here's the whole process.

Step 1 — Find an accredited RTO

Only a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) can issue a White Card. Look for one delivering the unit CPCCWHS1001 — Prepare to work safely in the construction industry. Check they're accredited on training.gov.au.

Step 2 — Complete the course

The training covers site safety basics: hazards, risk control, your responsibilities, and what to do in an emergency. It can be done in person or, in most states, online, and usually takes around 6 hours.

Step 3 — Verify your identity

You'll need to prove who you are (100 points of ID). For online courses, this often includes a verification step to confirm it's really you completing the assessment.

Step 4 — Get your card

Once you pass, you'll receive an interim certificate straight away and your physical White Card in the mail. The interim usually lets you start work while the card arrives.
